Mr Raymond James McKeown

Sunday 24th September saw the passing of the College’s oldest ex-student, Raymond James McKeown. Born into a dairying farming family at Barrine on the Atherton Tablelands on the 3rd of May 1924, Ray was aged 99 at the time of his death.

Coming from a strong Catholic family, Ray began at SAC as a Sub-Junior in 1938 and left school after completing Junior in 1939 aged 15. The following year, 1940, saw Ray employed in the commercial printing division of the Cairns Post. He remained in the employ of the Cairns Post for the next 50 years, retiring in 1990.

Ray and his wife Jean had four children. The boys following their father in attending St Augustine’s. Ray had a deep love of his family and his faith and remained a regular attendee at Mass for as long as his health allowed. He epitomised the virtues of good manners, kindness and generosity.

The College was represented at his funeral by Principal, Mr Glen Sievers, Brother’s Community Leader, Br John Horgan, and the 2024 College Captain and Vice Captain. Our condolences are extended to Ray’s family and many friends. May he rest in peace.
