LIBRARY NEWS

It’s Book Week!
Across Australia, this week is all about celebrating incredible Australian authors and illustrators. Book Week is an initiative from the Children’s Book Council of Australia that’s designed to promote a love of literature and recognises the very best picture, fiction and non-fiction books released in the previous twelve months.
Book Week is a little quieter than usual this year at HTS, with our biannual dress-up parade on next year and also with the busyness of the musical and Infant’s athletics carnival this week. But that doesn’t mean that there's no fun!
This year, a number of events are being held during snack breaks and library lessons that I hope students will enjoy. Some of the activities include a book mark design competition, guessing games (book in a jar, bookworm count, who am I book characters), a reading Kahoot and book trivia competition on Friday. Keep an eye out on Facebook for some more information about these too.
And the Winners Are…
During Term 3, Primary classes read shortlisted books from a number of categories and while most of us didn’t choose the final winners, we agreed that all the shortlisted books were great.
The Books of the Year are:
Early Childhood -Where the Lyrebird Lives by Vikki Conley and ill. Max Hamilton
Picture Book - My Strange Shrinking Parents by Zeno Sworder
Younger Readers - Runt by Craig Silvey
Older Readers - Neverlanders by Tom Taylor and ill. Jon Sommariva
Eve Pownall Award (non-fiction) - DEEP: Dive into Hidden Worlds by Jess McGeachin
New Illustrator - Tiny Wonders and ill. Sally Soweol Han
For information about these books, you can read about them at the CBCA website here.
The PRC is Over!
The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2023 has now closed and it’s time to return any final reading logs for validation before this Friday 1/9/23. Thank you to everyone who has participated and returned these to the library, it's been a huge effort and over 109 readers have completed the challenge. Student participation certificates will be sent to the school in late Term 4.
There was a flurry of students handing in their reading records this week!
Super readers from the primary are: KJ Eshman, Liam Guest, Fergus Lea, Connor Newton, Zalie Borrowdale, Callie O'Connor, Carter O'Connor and Miette Sargeant.
Congratulations to the following marvellous secondary students for completing the Challenge too: Jonah Moore, Jack McGavin, Elkie Sargeant, Jack Sinclair and Hannah Bourke.
SORA Books of the Week
Two more great SORA e-books for primary and secondary students this week - ‘Kind’ by Jess McGeachin and ‘The Museum of Broken Things’ by Lauren Draper. Instructions to log into SORA can be found here.
Last, but not least…
Check out some of the fun onomatopoeia work done by KD last week. I couldn't get over Kindergarten’s great writing and how good K-2 students were at giving examples of sound words. Did your child remember to ask you about them? There was a lollipop riding on them remembering how to say onomatopoeia! (it’s hard enough to spell!)
Maggie's entries in the bookmark competition.
Happy reading,
Mrs Toni Fraser
