KinrOSCARS – The festival of Year 12 begins

Having successfully navigated the HSC Trial Exams, our Year 12 cohort has commenced the final run towards the end of school and graduation. While we will maintain a high expectation of academic rigour, we recognise the socio-emotional significance of the final weeks of term. As such, several events have been planned to celebrate the students’ final few weeks together. On Monday evening at Wolaroi House, we held the annual ‘KinrOSCARS’, a night where the Year 12 students channelled their inner celebrity and donned their op-shop finery to attend the awards night. The winners received the coveted golden statue in a vast array of comedic categories and the guests were treated to a variety of spontaneous performances as the nominees staked their claims, from singing, modelling and dancing to reenactments from the school musical. It was a fabulous and hilarious event. Kudos to Mack, Heidi and Fletch for hosting the ceremony, to the rest of the students who participated so fantastically in the spirit of the evening, and for the staff who supported the running of the event. Next up, the Year 12 Girls v Y12 Boys netball match!

Courage, Respect and Inclusiveness: Kinross Wolaroi celebrates Wear it Purple Day

Wear it Purple Day was held last Friday, 25 August. The focus of Wear it Purple Day is to celebrate and show our acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people in the school and local community. It is about us as a school community supporting all students to be well, happy and safe at school. Our school values diversity and is committed to all students demonstrating respectful behaviour.

Last week was organised so that each house completed an artistic project to be displayed in the DPA and Library. Art ranged from creating colourful paper flowers, quilts and paper chains to help represent the colourful and vibrant LGBTQIA+ community. Students and staff were invited to wear purple or rainbow clothing for our mufti day to show support for the students and teachers who identify as LGBTQIA+.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Smedley (Williams Head Mentor) and Williams House students who took charge of preparing for all activities. William House Year 11 students did an excellent job in making sure the art supplies were provided to all mentor groups and the BBQ was a great success, raising funds to keep the Wear it Purple Day website and resources running.

Student Leadership – 2024 Prefect Selection Interviews

Last week Ms Kite (Head of Student Wellbeing), Mrs McCalman (Senior Years Co-ordinator) and I had the pleasure and privilege of conducting School Prefect interviews for 2024. To our dedicated Year 11 students who interviewed, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your passion, commitment, and aspirations to represent our school community are genuinely commendable. We are proud of each one of you for taking this bold step. The process will continue in the coming weeks and will include staff and student voting prior to recommendations being forwarded to Dr Parry for finalisation of the student leadership team for next year.
