JSC Trugo Place - Christmas Cheer

It’s Christmas! So the JSC decided to spread the festive cheer by organising for the school to make things for Trugo Place. Trugo Place is a local aged care centre with over 100 residents. We made cards, posters, decorations and so much more. Then Mimi and I delivered it all. They were so grateful that our students had used their own time to make such thoughtful and special things. They also wished all of NLPS a very merry Christmas!

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health and Wellbeing During the Holidays

A gentle reminder: During the holiday period, your child’s usual support systems may look different. Encourage your child to identify their ‘trusted adults’ at home and within the community. The following guidance, endorsed by Headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation, may be useful in supporting your child’s mental health and wellbeing over the holidays.

Stay Connected: Encourage your child to maintain social relationships. Even if they prefer some alone time, staying in touch with friends (both school friends and out of school friends) can help them feel connected and supported. Assist your child in providing opportunities to have friends at your home.

Stay Involved: Encourage participation in hobbies, school holiday activities, or sports. These activities assist children feel connected to their community. Involve them in household decisions and responsibilities to build their confidence.

Physical Activity: Physical activity is crucial for mental and physical health. Even small activities like walking can relieve stress and improve mood. Find activities you enjoy as a family and plan to do them regularly or organise physical activities with your child’s friends.

Regular Routine: A consistent sleep routine can help young people feel more energised and focused. Encourage them to wake up and go to bed at the same time each day (not always easy on holidays) and create a sleep-friendly environment by avoiding electronic devices before bed.

Healthy Eating: A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water can improve mood, energy levels, and overall health. Involve your child in selecting or preparing dinner or lunch.

Play and Fun: Make time for fun activities to help your child recharge, reduce stress, and strengthen social connections. Impromptu activities can also provide a sense of adventure and fun.

Wishing you a wonderful break with your family and a joyous Christmas and New Year.
