PRAYER

Lord Jesus,

You tell us that whenever two or more

are gathered In Your name,

You are present in their midst.

And so we are confident that as we

lift up our thoughts to You,

You are indeed with us.

Help us in all we do

Your presence among us and within us.

May all our actions give glory to

Your name and promote peace and love to the world.

We pray this in Your most holy name.

                             Amen.

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Last week four of our grade five students, Belinda, Eliza, Jane and Zara, presented at the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools STEM MAD initiative which was held at the Catholic Leadership Centre. The aim of the initiative is to encourage students to use their knowledge and understanding in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to design something that will make a difference to the lives of others. The girls’ entry into the competition was a ramp that can be added to a wheelchair to enable the user to navigate different terrains. While this is a wonderful representation of the work the students have done in STEM this year, it is also recognition of how they are thinking of ways to contribute to society and to the dignity of others. I am pleased to advised that they were awarded the ‘Young Health Innovator Award’ for their design.

STEM MAD Showcase

Last term the Grade 5/6 students were invited by MACS to participate in the STEM MAD project. We worked in small groups and each group needed to think of a real-life issue and try to come up with a solution. All of our projects were entered into the MACS showcase competition and our group was selected as the winner from our school. Our idea was to help wheelchair users have easier access to footpaths and trams. We designed a prototype of a wheelchair and a fold out ramp which would mean the ramp could be used when footpaths were being repaired or to make it easier to get on trams.

Last Thursday we went to the Catholic Leadership Centre in the city to present our idea at the STEM MAD Showcase. We needed to explain our design, how it works and how we thought of our idea to lots of judges and to many other visitors. There were many great projects presented by other schools, it was interesting to see their ideas and prototypes.

We were also interviewed on LIVE FM radio to discuss our project. It was very exciting to wear the big headphones and have bright lights on us as we answered the interviewer's questions. It was all very exciting. There was also a fun photo booth where we chose different accessories to wear. We also got free gelati, which was delicious!

At the end of the day, they announced the winners. We were so excited and surprised when we heard the announcer say 'Congratulations St Philip's, Blackburn North for winning the Young Health Innovator Award!' We couldn't believe it, we were so excited to win an award.

We had such an amazing day at the STEM MAD Showcase. Thank you to the Mitcham family for their help and assistance on the day. Thank you to Mrs Sherriff for teaching us and helping with our project and thank you to Sophie for coming to STEM MAD and helping us on the day.

YARRA VALLEY WATER WATCHERS Incursion

On Monday 16th October, Kirsty and Christine from Yarra Valley Water visited our school to teach us all about the Water Watchers program. We were introduced to four characters Washy, Welly, Wade and Wavy, and they helped us to learn ways to save water.

These are some of the things that we can all do to make a difference:

*limit showers to 4 minutes only

*switch the tap off when brushing your teeth

*make sure the dishwasher and washing machine are full before using them

*use a container underneath taps or in the shower to collect excess water to water the garden.

The students and staff showed great enthusiasm and interest in the Water Watchers program, as it was both entertaining and informative. We will be making a big effort at school to implement water watcher ideas, we encourage you to do the same at home.
