Senior School Report

Year 12 Celebrations Week

The week commencing Monday 16 October saw the Year 12 students begin to celebrate their final week at Scoresby Secondary College, before they moved into exams, further study or employment.  Many took the opportunity to reflect on how far they had come and how much they had developed during their time at the College.

Monday morning began with a breakfast, with most enjoying the bacon, eggs and coffee on offer – what a way to start the day and week! Students were then enjoying a recess morning tea followed by a movie afternoon on Tuesday as they watched ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2’, complete with popcorn and comfy seats.

On Wednesday, students were invited to plant roses in the grounds, forever leaving their legacy as the Class of 2023. They then celebrated their final assembly, where their achievements were recognised by all students and staff.

On Friday night, staff and students, along with their family and other significant guests, were able to celebrate the graduating class at our Valedictory Dinner at the Vogue Ballroom. This night was the ultimate celebration of the Class of 2023.

We wish the entire cohort all the best in their exams, further study, employment and life that comes after Scoresby Secondary College.

Personally, as your coordinator, I was so proud of how you all developed and grew throughout the year – I can genuinely say that you were a great group of Year 12 students, and I was so proud of you all.

Year 11 Profiles

Abbey Steele

At the age of four Abby was really interested in dance. Her mum googled dance classes and came up with Calisthenics. She joined Fernleigh Calisthenics club and fell in love with the sport. In her first year she participated in the “frog dance” which she thoroughly enjoyed.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with Calisthenics it requires many hours of practice and dedication. It includes several different categories of dance from free arm, rods, clubs, march and aesthetics, as well as dance/review.

Abby’s favourite routine is free arm and her least favourite is clubs.

Abby stayed with Fernleigh until 2018 when she joined Knox-Waverly after Fernleigh shut down.  Abby attends classes once a week. She enjoys the exercise, the physical flexibility it provides, dedication and friendships that being part of a club provide.

The club participates in competitions every year all over Victoria culminating with the main competition in Ballarat in October.  Abby intends to continue with calisthenics into the future.  Abby recommends calisthenics to everyone as it’s a lot of fun.

Josh Davies

Josh Davies is not only one of our diligent students but also a talented musician. Many of you may have heard his excellent drumming abilities when we have had musical events in the student centre.

Josh’s interest in music started at an early age with a wooden spoon and pots and pans at the age of two.   At the age of four he was listening to the rock band Kiss while other kids his age were into The Wiggles.  His parents introduced him to a variety of music including Nirvana and Linkin Park while his prep teacher introduced Josh to Led Zepplin, The Who and The Foo Fighters. Other influences have been the Sex pistols, Billy Idol and some video games. He also likes to sing and play the bass guitar for fun.

As he was growing up Josh had several toy drum kits as he destroyed them with his furious overuse when drumming.  He started drumming lessons while at Primary school and at six years of age was given his first professional Billy Hyde Drum Kit. He’s competed in “Drum Off” competitions which he found to provide a great experience.

Josh continues to listen to all kinds of music. The artists he listens to help to build his knowledge in a variety of ways. These days he is influenced by John Bonham (Led Zepplin), Neil Peart (Rush), Elven Jones (Jazz) and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless).

Josh studies VET Music at Scoresby Secondary College and is a member of two bands, Rare Phenomenon and Blew Layne, which play a mixture of metal, jazz fusion and psychedelic rock.

Josh would like to pursue a career in the music industry. He is going to Boxhill TAFE in 2024 to complete Certificate IV in Music performance.

Josh is passionate about his drumming, he shows persistence and pride in his achievements. We can’t wait to find out where his future takes him.
