Assistant Principal Reports

Milestones

Whilst our Year 12 students conclude their exam period and eagerly await their results as they look to a bright future, we welcome our 2024 Year 7 students with teachers beginning to work with them, their parents and carers, and the Grade 6 teachers, to get to know the students as learners and as individuals. Teachers are working to develop an understanding of their new students’ areas of strength and where support may be required.

Next year’s Year 7 students have already attended school for one day and some will visit again prior to the state-wide Year 7 Orientation Day scheduled for Tuesday the 12 December.  On that day, students will meet their classroom teachers and begin to experience life in secondary school as new members of the Scoresby Secondary College community.

On Wednesday the 14 November and Friday the 17 November, I was privileged to spend two days with our students as part of their weeklong City Experience.  As always, the students represented the college very well, with some experiencing fatigue from a week of early mornings using public transport and being on their feet for much of each day.

Students were intrigued when they discovered that the Victoria Market was situated on an old graveyard and were in awe of the MCG as a modern-day Colosseum drenched in sporting history.  The contrast of wealth and poverty sharing the same streets in Melbourne was not lost on the students, nor was the need to respect the past through Heritage listings of facades that must be retained as the city evolves to meet the current needs of a growing population.

On Thursday the 16 November, our VCE Vocational Major students celebrated their contribution to Scoresby Secondary College, paying their respects to the indigenous communities that were on the land long before our college was built. They invited two local elders to hold a smoking ceremony to officially open and bless the Yarning Circle, so that the college community can use the space as an outdoor learning area and socialising.  The ceremony was held in the Junior School courtyard with students in years 7, 8 and 10 in attendance.

Assistant Principal - Teaching & Learning

Congratulations

I am pleased to report that our Year 10 students  and 11 students have successfully completed their exams, and we are proud of their hard work and achievements.

This year, we trialed a new location for the exams, the Student Centre, which was embraced by the students, as well as the other various locations where exams were conducted. This trial enabled us to ascertain how we can better establish exam rooms for  2024.

We would like to extend our congratulations to all our students who took part in the exams, and we hope that the results reflect the effort and dedication they have put into their studies. We believe that the feedback opportunities will provide valuable insights for the students to improve their performance in the future.

As we move forward, we are excited about our Launch Program (formerly Headstart), which commences next week. This program will equip students in all three VCE streams with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their studies to  achieve their goals and aspirations.

Furthermore, we are thrilled about Orion Night approaching in early December - an opportunity to recognise and celebrate success and hard work, as well as student endeavours. We believe that this event will be a great way to bring our school community together and acknowledge the achievements of our students.

In conclusion, we are proud of our student's achievements and are committed to providing them with the best opportunities to succeed. We look forward to seeing all the students at the Launch Program and Orion Night, and we extend our best wishes to them for the remainder of the academic year.
