Learn to Play Bag Pipes & Snare Drum

We are welcoming enquiries from students aged 8 and up who are interested in learning Bag Pipes or the Snare Drum. This is in conjunction with the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Band.

There are no tuition fees incurred as the Warrnambool Pipe Major and Drum Major come to school each week to tutor students for a 20 minute lesson during school hours. To begin learning to play pipes or drums there is a purchase fee of $85, which covers a chanter (pipes) or $100 for drumsticks and a drum pad. This cost also includes the tuition book.

Once competent (usually after 18 months), many Pipes and Drums students compete in competitions at state, national and international levels and we can provide further information once this stage is reached.

Please email your child's interest to sphillips@kings.vic.edu.au

Here are some reflections from students on their experience with this program:

"Hi my name is Maisie. I’m from Year 4 and learn the Bagpipes. I have been playing them for about two and a half years. It has been a fun experience learning new techniques and memorising tunes. On the 5th November I played for the first time with the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Band at Flagstaff Hill. I really enjoyed doing this, even though I was a little nervous. The band member are really nice, and supportive. I like that all my friends and family have made me feel comfortable playing in front of people, and give me the confidence to even pick up the Bagpipes. I suggest if you want to learn an instrument that is unique, try the Bagpipes, LEARN THEM NOW!".

"On the 5th November, Maisie and I played Bagpipes for the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Band. I started learning Bagpipes in Year 3 and stayed with it during COVID when many people dropped out. Just this year I got the Bagpipes and joined the band. I haven’t learned too much but I can still play. I love playing the Bagpipes because it has helped my memory and I love it because it’s something different. I really recommend playing the Bagpipes. I get taught by Donald Blair and he has taught me lots".
