This semester Prep students have engaged in a unit of work called, ‘Special Places and How We Care For Them’. As part of this unit of work, Prep students and their families participated in a special event called, ‘Something from My Place' last Friday. The learning event was an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of what makes a place special and how special places are different for everyone.
The two Prep classes joined together and each student was given the opportunity to share an item from their place as well as explore things from other students’ special places. We had items ranging from board and card games, to tasty food treats, outdoor sports and arts and crafts. It was a fun and entertaining morning for all involved.
On Thursday 19th September, the Antarctic bus came. The bus helped us to learn more about Antarctica. We had already been learning about Antarctica in our HASS Unit this term but we learnt a lot more from our Antarctic visitors.
We learnt that Antarctica is the coldest and driest continent in the world. We also learnt that there was a rock in Adelaide and there was the exact same kind of rock in Antarctica. Douglas Mawson discovered them and they showed that Australia and Antarctica had once been connected together.
We were surprised to find out how tall Emperor Penguins were and how cold the water in Antarctica is. We wondered how so many animals can live in such a cold place. Year 1/2W loved playing the guess the sound game, learning about magnets and meeting the pretend penguin. Year 1/2D loved trying on the Antarctic coats. Year 1/2A loved playing with the penguin eggs and investigating magnetic forces. We loved it so much we hope they will come again one day!

A reminder for tomorrow, Thursday 26th September, that our students will be having an end-of-term casual clothes / sports colours day. Students in both Primary and Secondary are invited to wear sports colours or sports clothes (can be any sport), with money raised going to the Children's Cancer Foundation. If you don't have sports colours or clothes, just casual clothes are fine. Please ensure that clothes are appropriate with fully enclosed shoes to provide protection. Cost is a gold coin donation.
It is getting closer to the end of term and the change-over to summer uniform in Term 4 for our primary students. This also includes our ‘Yes Hat, Yes Play’ policy requiring all primary students to wear either our school legionnaire or wide-brimmed hat whilst outside.
Due to our varied weather here in Tasmania, students have the option of wearing either the winter or summer uniform for the first two weeks of Term 4. All students will be required to be in full summer uniform by Monday 28th October.
Uniform sales are available throughout the term and we also have a large range of donated second hand, give away uniforms available.
To look at donated uniforms, or to donate uniforms that are no longer required, please come and see the friendly staff at the school office. There is also a DCS Community Uniform Facebook Group for buying, selling or giving away uniforms. Please contact Jasmin at: thompsonj@dcs.tas.edu.au if you wish to get connected on this platform.
