Calder Athletics

The annual Calder Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday 14th August at Charlton Park. Students participated enthusiastically across all events, showing terrific effort, teamwork and sportsmanship. We were lucky to enjoy perfect weather on the day, which made for an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. A big congratulations to all students for their achievements and for taking out the Relay Shield – a fantastic team effort! Thank you to staff, families, and community members who came along to support the students.

What's happening in 5/6?

This week in Literacy students are completing Word Origins lessons on the morpheme ‘sign’, meaning to give a sign, mark. We then have been creating new words by adding prefixes such as de (out, away), re (back, again), and as (to, towards, near) and also suffixes such as al (relating to.)  Students have also been learning tools to create a discussion with the use of the model text ‘Should Dragons be hunted?’. Students have been busily reading their novels in Book Club and have been have great discussions about events that they are reading. This week is also Book Week and to start the week off we had the pleasure of listening to the F-6 School Captains read the shortlisted book ‘Spiro’.

Students in Years 5 and 6 have been busy in PE preparing for both the House and Calder Athletics Carnivals. They’ve been practicing a range of track and field events, building their skills and confidence ahead of competition day. Alongside this, they’ve continued their invasion games unit, working with the Sport, Recreation and Aquatics students to develop teamwork, strategy and game sense. It’s been an action-packed few weeks with plenty of fun and energy!

Book Review by Koko

Koko recommended the book Charlotte's Web by E.B White. The book is a picture, adventure and fantasy book. The main characters are Fern, her dad, Wibur, horses, cows, sheep, geese and Ferns brothers. Ferns dad is about to kill a pig but fern steps in and stops her dad. He lets her keep him and she named him Wibur. She would recommend the book to Grade 3 students to year 6 students and rates it 5/5 stars.
