Supporting Your Child's Learning: New Positive Behaviour Initiatives at Valkstone PS

Dear Valkstone Primary School families,

We're excited to share some important updates about how we're supporting positive behaviour and creating a more predictable, safe learning environment for all our students.

What We're Doing

Our dedicated staff team has been working hard to implement new strategies that help students feel secure and succeed in their learning. Here's what's happening in classrooms:

Behaviour Steps Framework

All teachers are now explicitly teaching our Behaviour Steps document, a clear, consistent approach to behaviour management that students can understand and follow across the school.

Predictable Daily Routines

We know that predictable and familiar experiences help children feel safe and ready to learn. That's why every classroom now includes:

  • Morning Circle Time (5 -7 minutes) - A welcoming start to help students transition smoothly into their learning day.

  • Entrance Routines -  Consistent ways for students to settle into their classroom.

  • Exit Routines - Structured endings that help students finish their day positively.

  • Clear Classroom Behaviour Expectations - Every student knows what's expected.

Why This Matters

Research shows that circle routines help students develop self-regulation skills and build stronger connections with their classmates and teachers. These routines also give students valuable opportunities to practice important social and emotional skills like:

  • Taking turns and listening respectfully;

  • Problem-solving together;

  • Supporting one another.

Resources for Families

To help you understand and support these initiatives at home, we've prepared the following documents:

  1. Behaviour Steps & ABC Reflection Triangle (Teacher Script):

2. Circle Routines Structure:

3. Examples of Daily Routines:

4. Classroom Behaviour Expectations:

Moving Forward Together

We encourage you to review these materials and discuss them with your child. If you have any questions about these initiatives or would like to know more about how you can support your child's positive behaviour at home, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or the school office.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to create the best possible learning environment for every Valkstone PS student.

Kind regards,

Grant Rounsley
