What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!
2024 House Captains
House Captain Wrap
The last few weeks our external sporting events have settled down.
It has been great to see so many classrooms still giving out house points and students working hard to achieve them. Continue to live our three school values and be kind to one another.
Curriculum Update
Foundation:
Over the past few weeks, the Foundation students focus commenced a unit on throwing and catching. The sport which was utilised to practise these skills was Ultimate Frisbee.
During the lessons the students learned how to throw and hold the frisbee correctly. The technique which was used was familiar to them (talk move). They also developed an understanding on how to use both the Crocodile and Crab catch techniques. The students practised these skills in partners before applying them to different stationed activities which extended their learning to involve throwing with accuracy.
Year One/Two:
Over the past few weeks, the Level 1 and 2 students focus was on the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) throwing and catching.
The core sport which was involved in practising these skills was Ultimate Frisbee. During the first lesson the students worked with a partner to practise the correct technique for throwing the frisbee as well as practising the crocodile catch. Once the students spent some time on practising these core skills, they moved on to applying them to seven different stations which focused on throwing accuracy. It was great to watch the student's confidence grow throughout the lessons
The Level Two students learning was extended to play a modified game of Ultimate Frisbee out on the oval. It was great to watch the students work together cooperatively whilst applying the learned throwing and catching skills.
Year Three/Four:
Over the last few weeks, the Level 34 students have commenced a unit involving striking. The sport which was utilised was both outdoor and indoor hockey. The students focused on developing their confidence with skill execution before we progressed to match play. The students learned how to complete a push-pass, controlling the puck while in motion and shooting for goal passed an opponent.
Once the student demonstrated the required level of confidence, we moved into playing both a game of Outdoor and Indoor Hockey. Both environments offered the students different opportunities to apply their learned skills. Playing outside gave the students more time and space whereas playing in the gym made them realise they have to think quicker and execute the skills faster. It was great to watch them all work positively with their other team members.
Year Five/Six:
Over the last few weeks, the Level 56 students have commenced a unit which has focused on the invasion game European Handball. For most of the students, this sport was foreign to them but provided a great opportunity for further skill exposures and development. The first lesson focused predominately on practising the required skills e.g. bouncing, throwing and shooting for goal. It was crucial to allow students to practise these skills as the size of the ball that is used in the game is a lot different to what they are used to using.
Once the students demonstrated competency with the skills, we moved to match play in the gym. The class was split into four equal teams and played a round robin. It was wonderful to watch the skills be applied to each match and the student's confidence grow.
