This Week's Learning Bulletin: Maths

Update on Maths Teaching at Our School

You may have seen recent media coverage about the Grattan Institute’s Maths Guarantee report, which highlights the importance of improving how maths is taught in primary schools across Australia. The report recommends focusing on the basics, supporting teachers through professional learning, and making sure every child gets help early when they need it.

We’re pleased to let you know that our school is already taking action in line with these recommendations.

What We're Doing

Our whole-school approach to teaching maths is grounded in evidence about what works best for student learning. This year, we’ve strengthened our instructional model to ensure every maths lesson is clear, purposeful, and builds student confidence.

Every lesson now begins with a short fluency routine, where students practise essential number facts like addition, subtraction, and multiplication. This helps free up brainpower so they can tackle more complex problems with ease.

We explicitly teach maths concepts in both whole-class and small-group instruction. This means students are guided clearly through new ideas, with time to practise and apply them.

Teachers use a wide range of assessment data to tailor their teaching to meet students’ individual needs. This ensures all students are supported appropriately, whether they need extra help or further challenge.

Our Progress

Our recent 2025 NAPLAN results show that students are achieving well above in maths, and we’re proud of this progress. But we’re not standing still. We’re continuing to refine and improve our practice based on what the research shows is most effective.

Final Thought

Reports like The Maths Guarantee give a broad view of national education, but what matters most is what’s happening in your child’s classroom. We are committed to giving every learner the best chance to succeed in maths through strong teaching, ongoing support, and a focus on building foundational skills from the very beginning.

We’re proud of our school’s approach and will continue to refine our teaching to give every child the best opportunity to succeed in maths.

If you would like to learn more about how we teach maths, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
