News from Prep
As part of our celebrations for the school feast day, the Prep students teamed up with their Year 5 Buddies to colour in beautiful pictures of Mary. It was such a joy to watch the older students take on a leadership role, guiding and encouraging their younger friends with patience and care. The pairs worked wonderfully together, and the creativity that came through in their artwork was truly impressive. Each piece was unique, vibrant, and filled with love. An uplifting way to honour a special day in our school calendar.
The Preps have enjoyed a very busy term of wonderful learning experiences. We have discovered CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) and are learning to read and write them. We know all the vowels and can give examples of words that have short and long vowel sounds.
We are continuing to be risk takers with our writing by having a go at writing unfamiliar and tricky words. The Preps have had lots of fun learning about measurement, specifically length. They have used different informal units to measure the length of classroom objects, including pop sticks, unifix, counters etc. We have explored what ‘Identity’ means in our inquiry concept and the Preps have been learning about what makes them special and unique.
News from Year 1/2
Year 1/2 Mathematicians Investigate Measurement and Length!
The Year 1/2's have been enthusiastic about diving into the world of measurement in Mathematics, with a focus on length using informal units. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and problem-solving challenges, the students have developed a strong understanding of how to measure, compare, estimate, and order lengths—setting a solid foundation for future learning.
We began our measurement journey by learning to identify and choose suitable informal units to measure length. The students explored objects like blocks, paper clips, and even their own hand spans to decide which were best for measuring different items. They quickly discovered that using consistent, uniform units is crucial for accurate results! You’ll see in the photos just how engaged they were in comparing hand spans—discussing why some measuring methods worked better than others.
With their informal units ready, students moved on to measuring the length of a variety of objects and shapes. They practised lining up units correctly and checked each other’s work. A big focus was on accuracy, and students were encouraged to explain if and why an object was not measured correctly.
Next, we looked at comparing and ordering lengths. Students measured items and then practised placing them in order from shortest to longest. This activity sparked excellent peer discussions, particularly around identifying measurement mistakes and correcting them—an important skill in developing their reasoning.
Another exciting part of the unit was learning to estimate length before measuring. Using what they had learned so far, students made educated guesses about how long items were, then checked their estimations using informal units. It was wonderful to see their estimation skills grow with each activity, showing a deeper understanding of measurement and spatial awareness.
Overall, the Year 1/2s have shown fantastic growth in understanding and applying measurement concepts. Their curiosity, problem-solving, and collaboration have shone through every lesson. We’re so proud of our budding mathematicians!
