Year 6 - Dance Curriculum

Over the last week, Year 6 students at Highvale Primary School have been thoroughly enjoying participating in this year’s Dance Curriculum, which has focused on the vibrant and energetic genres of hip hop and free verse. Through daily sessions, students are exploring rhythm, movement, and expression, building their confidence and creativity along the way. The program has encouraged students to step outside of their comfort zones and experiment with different styles and techniques in a supportive and engaging environment.

The introduction to hip hop has allowed students to learn iconic moves such as popping, heel taps and robotic moves. They practised working in unison, perfecting choreography as a group while also having the opportunity to develop their own individual flair. In free verse, students had the freedom to improvise and express themselves through movement, responding to music in a way that felt natural and meaningful to them. This element of choice and creativity has helped students appreciate that dance is not only about technique but also about storytelling and emotion.

The students will be performing along with every other year level next week, which is open to parents to come and view. Year 6s will be at 1:50pm on Friday 6th June. We are so excited for them to share their impressive dance moves with the community!

Hear from some of our students as they reflect on their experiences so far:

Ever since the 26/5, the year sixes have been taking part of the new educational system, the dance curriculum. The course was difficult at first but the year sixes persevered and managed to pull through several days and show off excellent dance talent. “This is a positive way to teach students to persevere,” a particular student said. Dancing is a kind of exercise and is valued greatly at Highvale Primary. Lead by their instructor, Omar, the year sixes learnt how to heel-tap and pop dance. They will be performing on the 6th of June, at 1:50pm in the MPC!

The dance curriculum is a very educational program where we learn several exiting dance routines with our instructor, Omar. He is very humorous and encourages us to do our very best. I am a Year 6, and we are learning the heel-tap dance as well as Fancy Footwork. We are 3 days into the curriculum. So far it is pretty fun.
