Assistant Principal Report

Dear Highvale Families,
It's incredible to realise that we are now half way through Term 2! There has been so much happening across the school, which we are pleased to celebrate in this issue of the newsletter.
Education Week 2025: A Celebration of Cultures and Community
Last week, our school was alive with the sights and sounds of Education Week, a celebration that truly brought our community together. It was wonderful to see so many parents, carers, and family members join us to celebrate this year's theme, *Celebration of Cultures*.
The Symphony Band, Concert Band, and Choir delivered incredible performances, showcasing the dedication and talent of our students. Each performance was polished, heartfelt, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The enthusiasm from the audience was a testament to the hard work of our young musicians and their teachers.
One of the highlights of the week was the Open Classroom Morning, where every classroom was filled with families engaging in meaningful activities with their children. From cultural storytelling and creative crafts to interactive learning experiences, it was truly special to witness the joy of shared learning.
A huge thank you to all family members who were able to attend and make this week so memorable. Your support and involvement mean so much to our students and staff, and we look forward to more opportunities to celebrate learning and community together!
Student Reports & Mathematics Curriculum Update
We are pleased to share important information about the structure of student reports this year, particularly regarding assessments in Mathematics. In accordance with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), your child's teacher will report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.
This year, we will be reporting against the revised Mathematics Curriculum 2.0. As this is the second year that Highvale Primary School has reported against this curriculum, your child’s mathematics report will also indicate their progress against the single achievement standard. This approach ensures a clear picture of their development over time.
Additionally, the Mathematics report will include a table detailing your child’s achievement across the key strands: Number, Space, Measurement, Statistics, and Probability (Years 3-6). This breakdown offers further insights into specific areas of learning and progress.
The VCAA introduced these reporting changes to support teachers in planning their teaching and learning programs in mathematics, providing greater flexibility to help students link concepts within mathematics as well as across other curriculum areas.
For further information, please refer to the department’s policy on Reporting Student Achievement and Progress Foundation to 10. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me or your child's teacher.
Student-Led Conferences
We are excited to introduce Student-Led Conferences as part of our reporting process this year. Instead of traditional parent-teacher interviews, we will be holding these conferences on Tuesday, 1st July. On this day, regular classes will NOT run as usual.
Instead, students will attend school only at the time of their scheduled conference. During their 15-minute session, students will take the lead—reflecting on their learning, showcasing work across various subjects, and sharing the pieces they are most proud of, explaining why they selected them. They will also discuss their future learning goals for Semester Two, setting clear targets for continued growth. The last 5 minutes of the conference will allow for parents to ask questions of teachers or discuss any important matters. Families also have the option to book a student-led conference with ONE specialist teacher, should they wish to gain further insights into a particular specialist subject area. Bookings for Student-Led Conferences will be available via Compass from Tuesday, 10th June. We look forward to seeing our students take ownership of their learning and share their progress with pride. If you have any questions, please reach out myself or your child’s classroom teacher.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Kind regards,
Kelly Soccio
