What’s Been Happening in Year 4?

Literacy

We have all been working very hard towards publishing our informative writing about our chosen biomes! During reading, we have been practising identifying the most important information when researching by taking notes and highlighting repeated vocabulary. As authors, we have been learning how to present our writing by using neat handwriting and font, borders, graphics and the overall layout and appearance. Our posters include a mixture of handwritten writing and typed text, demonstrating our technology skills and legible handwriting. We are all looking forward to showcasing our writing with our school community!

Numeracy

Did you know that the word Geometry originates from a Greek word- ‘Geo’ meaning ‘Earth’ and ‘Metria’ meaning ‘Measure’. So basically, it is the measurement of Earth. We have been learning all about Earth during Inquiry and how to describe the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects in Mathematics! Cartoon characters have been designed by combining 2D shapes to create composite shapes using digital technologies.

We have also been practising data investigations about topics of our interests. Topics we are collecting data about are Titanic, soccer players, Aussie wildlife, fidget toys, pasta and zodiac signs (just to name a few). Once we gather our data from our classmates, we will learn how to represent our information effectively as well as comparing and describing the variation. Look out for our data representations in our next newsletter!

Carlsruhe Annexe

Cubby inspections happen weekly at Carlsruhe to make sure we are keeping our cubbies safe, inclusive and respectful! The cubby inspectors visit each cubby and the winning cubby receives the golden pinecone. Our vegetable garden is looking fabulous with our lettuce, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower seedlings planted. The Carlsruhe chickens have been loving their new swing, ladder and bridge too!

Family Maths Game

Geometry nurtures a child’s ability to think, solve, and create. It’s not just about shapes - it's a building block for many life skills and academic subjects.

Barrier Game

Good questions to ask while playing:

  • “What words do you think will be helpful for this activity?”  (This is a great question to ask prior to playing.);

  • “Can you say that again another way?”;

  • '“What would you do differently next time you played?
