Seed of the Week is Silver Beet (Swiss Chard)

I know many Parents and their children have been very excited about seed of the week. There are still hundreds of Pak Choi seeds, so we will give then away until they are all gone.

Also, I get this question a lot, is it easy to grow? All the seeds I am giving away are fast growing and easy to grow. It’s for anyone who’s never grown anything to eat a chance to try.

This week’s seed of the week is Silver Beet, grows best in well-drained soil in direct sun or shade. When it comes to harvesting, just pull off the leaves as needed. The Silver Beet will continue to grow and provide you with enough leafy greens to add to a soup or steamed or boiled.

I want to add if you happen to grow any of the seed of the week seeds and would like to feature in a future newsletter, please provide a photo and three to four sentences about what you did and where you planted the seed.

Doesn’t it look delicious! There is sweet potato from our garden.

The Lady Bugs

Three years ago, I had a huge aphid problem, aphids are the plant world’s version of a mosquito. They land on a delicious high sugar producing plant and then suck the nutrients from the plant. This happened to all our bean crops. We have never had a successful crop of beans. This is when I decided to establish a new colony in the hidden garden, I had seen children collect them to take home. But I suggested to the children they can live in the hidden garden where there are plenty of tiny insects the Lady Bugs could eat.

Some of the children were shocked. Yes, they eat aphids and little insects. Many people assumed that they ate leaves, however they are just hunting for insects.

When is Garden Club for Term 2?

Currently Garden Club happens on Tuesday and Thursday morning, after the gates are open. We meet at the bubblers on the Churchill Avenue side of the school.

There is also Garden Club for Stage 3 on Friday, who are completing Pope Francis Award. This is a priority for Stage 3, however, anyone is welcome to join if there are extra jobs. Garden Club is FREE to join. Learn to be a lateral thinker with limited resources. Enjoy first pick after harvest and see fascinating creatures.
