Purple Group News – National Reconciliation Week

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we learn and play, the Wadawurrung People, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

This week in Purple Group, we’ve been learning about and celebrating National Reconciliation Week by respectfully exploring aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through language, music, movement, and art. During group time, we explored the movements of different Australian animals and were introduced to their names in Wadawurrung language. The children were fascinated to learn that Perridak means platypus and Dijrum means frog. We used these words in a new movement-based song that the children helped to create, which supported language development and cultural understanding in an age-appropriate way.

We also looked at the different flags of Australia, with a focus on the Aboriginal flag. Together, we discussed the meaning of each colour—black for the people, red for the earth, and yellow for the sun. The children then created their own versions of the flag as a creative way to reflect on what they had learned.

Throughout the week, we’ve been encouraging children to think about how we can care for Country—both in our own community and more broadly. Suggestions from the children included keeping our environment clean, recycling, and looking after plants and animals.

It’s been a thoughtful and engaging week that encouraged curiosity, respect, and a sense of connection to culture and place.
