Music and its harmonic power in times of reflection
I’d like to welcome everyone back for Term 2. I hope you all managed to find some time to relax and unwind, along with a few easter eggs and hot cross buns.
At the end of Term 1, we held our annual Concerto Concert at the historic Toorak Uniting Church. It was a remarkable concert, featuring an ambitious program that challenged our students and delighted the audience. I would like to acknowledge the work of our Head of Strings, Mr Lyndon Chester, for his work curating the concert, along with working with the Jorgenson Orchestra to accompany Junya Jiang and Kathrina Ang. I would like to congratulate all of the performers and encourage everyone to join us for next year's Concerto Concert which will be held in the new Music Building.
With Anzac Day approaching, it’s worth recognising the important role music plays, something that is often overlooked. Anyone who has watched the Anzac Day march along St Kilda Road toward the Shrine of Remembrance will have noticed the many marching bands, brass ensembles, and pipe and drum groups. These musicians lead current members of the Defence Force alongside returned servicemen and women. Beyond keeping the march in time, they bring colour and atmosphere to the occasion, adding moments of lightness to an otherwise solemn day.
One of the most powerful musical elements is the bugle calls “Last Post” and “Reveille.” For many, these are the most emotional moments of any service, inviting reflection and remembrance. Interestingly, the Last Post originated with British troops in the 17th Century as part of a series of bugle calls marking the end of the day’s duties on military bases. It wasn’t originally intended as music in the artistic sense, but rather as a practical signal to communicate with soldiers.
With this in mind, consider attending a local Anzac Day service this year. Take a moment to listen closely to the music and reflect on its significance in honoring and commemorating the day.
