YEAR 2

FROM THE CLASSROOM
Welcome back to school! We hope all our families had a wonderful and relaxing holiday filled with special family time and memory making. It has been lovely to see the children settled and happy as they return, ready for a new term of learning and growth.
We have had a fun week with our hook for our new Talk for Write, which sent students all over the school on an adventure to find flowers, learning about a girl called Go Go who lost her shoe in Reading, building 3 digit numbers in Maths with MAB blocks and learning about the suffix –ed in words in Morphology.
Some 2A students share their thoughts on what they have enjoyed this week...
“ I liked Performing Arts this week and singing the song”- Hunter
“ Our new Talk for Write text is really cool and I like the actions”- Claudia
“ I liked using the MAB to help me solve maths questions with my partner”- Sameer
“ The maths slides were fun this week and I wrote answers on my whiteboard’’- Nixon
LEARNING INTENTIONS FOR NEXT WEEK
LITERACY
Students will explore the text ‘Feathers for Phoebe’, a book about a little bird growing up and deciding who she wants to become with the help of her friend.
Students will learn new vocabulary from the text, discover the main idea of the text and summarise the most important parts of the text.
MATHS
Students will continue to represent numbers up to 1000 using materials. We are also learning to rename and order numbers to 1000. For example: 356 can be renamed as 3 hundreds, 5 tens and 6 ones, or as 35 tens and 6 ones.
INQUIRY
Students have begun a new inquiry unit of work called ‘My Community’ this week.
Next week, students will learn more about what a community is and the communities they are part of. Students will identify places in Clyde North and explain personal connections.
WELLBEING
Students will identify situations that can cause fear or anxiety. Students will describe coping strategies they can use to help manage their anxiety.
HOME READING - Ideas to Support Your Child
The most important part of reading is your child understanding what they have read.
When reading at home, ask your child simple questions like “What happened?”, “Why do you think the character did that?” or “What might happen next?” to encourage thinking beyond just the words.
Encourage your child to retell the story in their own words. This helps them organise their thinking and check their understanding.
Make connections to real life by asking, “Does this remind you of anything?” or “Have you ever felt like this character?” This builds deeper understanding.
We understand that some nights, your child might be too tired to read, or you may be short on time. Here are some ideas for those nights...
You might try reading just a page or a short section together, rather than the whole book. Even a few minutes of shared reading can be valuable.
If reading feels like too much, you can read the story aloud to your child while they listen or simply talk about the pictures and predict what might be happening in the story.
TISSUES
As we near the cooler weather we ask that you please provide a box of tissues for your child’s class. Thank you in advance as classes go through a lot of tissues.
WALKING PERMISSION
Please ensure you have given permission on Compass for your child to go on 'walking activities' outside of the school grounds. If you need support finding this, please see our friendly school office staff.
