Connected by Clayfield

A Clayfield College education does not end at graduation. In many ways, that is only the beginning. Our Old Collegians are the living legacy of the College, carrying its values, spirit and traditions into the wider world. Strong alumni connections are therefore not simply nostalgic; they are vital to the ongoing life, growth and strength of our community.

This was powerfully reinforced during our recent visits to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, where our Alumni and Foundation Manager, Meg Graham, and I had the privilege of spending time with a number of our Old Collegians. We were fortunate to connect with alumni representing graduating years from 1953 through to 2022, showcasing an extraordinary reflection of the depth and continuity of our College community.

Each conversation served as a powerful reminder that a Clayfield College education continues well beyond the College gates, shaping values, guiding choices and influencing the many ways our Old Collegians contribute to their communities. Hearing alumni journeys, reconnecting through shared memories and seeing the many and varied paths taken since leaving Clayfield was truly inspiring.

At their heart, alumni relationships are about connection. When former students remain engaged with their College, they affirm that education is not a transaction limited to a set number of years, but a lifelong relationship. Across the cities we visited, there was a strong and shared sense of belonging. This is reminder that while our alumni may be geographically dispersed, their connection to Clayfield remains deeply rooted.

For current students, our Old Collegians provide inspiration and aspiration. Their stories bring learning to life, showing students the many pathways that can follow a Clayfield education. Through mentoring, career conversations and shared experiences, alumni inspire our current students to imagine what might be possible for their own futures. Many of those we met spoke passionately about their desire to give back, and their commitment to offering guidance, sharing insights and supporting the next generation of students.

These connections also enrich the professional life of the College. Our Old Collegians represent a remarkable breadth of experience across industries, disciplines and communities. Their engagement strengthens the relevance of learning and ensures that the College remains connected to the real-world contexts our students will one day enter.

Equally important is the role Old Collegians play in preserving the College’s history and culture, as they hold the stories, traditions and shared experiences that shape who we are. These gatherings were not simply reunions; they were affirmations of continuity that honoured the past while strengthening connections for the future.

Strong alumni relationships also foster a culture of generosity and service. Many Old Collegians choose to give back through time, expertise or philanthropic support. They do this not out of obligation, but out of gratitude and connection. Their contributions help create opportunities for future generations and strengthen the College’s capacity to grow and thrive.

Ultimately, connections with our Old Collegians remind us that education is relational. A College is defined not only by its buildings or programmes, but by its people who have been shaped by its values and who continue to carry them forward.
