10 Tips for Enjoying the School Holidays

School holidays are a wonderful opportunity to slow down, reconnect as a family, and enjoy a break from busy routines. While parenting doesn’t take a holiday, a little planning and flexibility can help make this time enjoyable for everyone.

Here are some simple tips to help your family make the most of the break:

1. Plan together

Involve your children in creating a list of activities they’d like to do. Plan for both sunny and rainy days, and remember to include downtime, one-on-one time, and family activities.

2. Enjoy the simple (and free!) things

Some of the best holiday moments don’t cost a thing—think picnics, bike rides, visits to the local library, trips to the lake or mountain or time outdoors.

3. Let boredom happen

Unstructured time is important for creativity and problem-solving. A break from screens can help young minds recharge and explore new ideas.

4. Build independence

With less rushing in the mornings, children can practise new skills like making their own breakfast, helping with lunch, walking the dog, or completing small tasks independently.

5. Ask for help when needed

It’s okay to lean on your support network. Friends and family can help share the load and provide children with extra opportunities for social connection.

6. Be flexible

Not everything will go to plan—and that’s okay! Unexpected changes can become valuable learning experiences and sometimes even the most memorable family moments.

7. Prioritise self-care

Take time to recharge, even if it’s just a quiet cup of tea or a short break. When parents feel calm and supported, children benefit too.

8. Stay connected with others

Catching up with other families gives children time to play and parents a chance to connect and support one another.

9. Support your child’s wellbeing

Be mindful of your child’s needs. It’s okay to adjust plans or traditions if they feel overwhelming—your child’s wellbeing always comes first.

10. Make time to connect

School holidays are a special chance to slow down, listen, and enjoy one-on-one time with each child. These moments help build strong relationships that last all year.
