Club de Español

We had a great year at the Spanish Club! Our amazing club grew in so many ways. We grew in creativity, always thinking about new activities for the children, we grew in numbers, but mostly, we grew as a family. 

We really valued and enjoyed the presence of everyone who attended the club throughout the year. It was very special to have families who are not from Spanish speaking households: To you, thank you, as we highly appreciated your input with the club. 

A big GRACIAS to Mat who volunteered organising one of the activities, a very meaningful one where we learnt about the many connections between Spanish and Arabic, as well to Tere, who taught us how to make alfeñiques for Día de Muertos and now that we mentioned a word with the letter ñ, it what also a privilege to have Aggie's mum and dad, all the way from Colombia, teaching us more about this particular letter, a real honour to have Sunny's abuelitos with us for a while. The name of our club is Spanish Club, or Club de Español, but we feel we have also become the Newlands multicultural community club.

To bid farewell to this wonderful year, we had a little fiesta. We wanted to share a small sample of our food and “candela” with all Newlands’ community. Despite being a pretty windy day, the chorizos were happily sizzling on the BBQ, the arepas were smiling as the kids were grabbing them, the Chimichurri and pebre were ready to spice up the choripanes (a type of asado sandwich with grilled chorizo that is very popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) and the tortilla española brought us Spain’s royal flavours. We were pleased to see a good number of kids and parents lining up to have a bite and say, ¡hola!

From us, the team behind the club; Nicole, Veni, Catherine, Marta, Aggie, Elkin, Abner and Alberto, we wish you una Feliz Navidad y un Próspero Año Nuevo. 

We believe that as we see a divided world, where walls are built and pain and despair seem to be the norm, building bridges and creating strong communities is the answer to fear and sorrow. 

We are looking forward to seeing you next year.
