Room 2
Foundation - Year 2
We have launched into the year with a firm but fair approach, getting straight into learning while carefully building our classroom routines and expectations along the way. The children have been settling beautifully, showing resilience, curiosity and a growing confidence as learners. It has been wonderful to see such a positive start to the year!
In our literacy learning, we are focusing on understanding what readers, writers and teachers do in the classroom. Students are learning to recognise their role as learners, knowing what their job is and what to do when learning feels tricky. To support this, we watched and discussed the story Sometimes I Get Stuck, which helped reinforce the message that learning isn’t always easy and that’s okay. We are building confident learners who try first, persevere, and know that giving things a go is an important part of learning. 💪📖
We Share – We talk about our learning and show our work
✏️ Writing
We have a strong early focus on:
The children are learning what it means to be a reader, a writer and a learner in our classroom.
🗣️ Phonics
We are using the Phonics Plus program, with students working across four differentiated groups in the classroom. This allows us to meet students where they are and support steady progress for every learner.
🧠 Sight words (Heart Words) are also being explicitly taught and practised as part of our literacy rotations, helping students build fluency and confidence in reading and writing.
In Maths, we have been revisiting counting and counting accurately, with a strong focus on place value. Most importantly, we are learning how to think and act like mathematicians.
In Maths, we are learning how to think and act like mathematicians. Students are encouraged to think out loud, share their ideas, and listen respectfully to the thinking of others. A strong emphasis is placed on having a go even when we’re unsure and understanding that making mistakes is a valuable part of learning. We are building a classroom culture where brave thinking is celebrated, effort is valued, and every student feels confident to contribute their ideas. 🧠✨
Alongside our academic learning, we are spending time getting to know ourselves as learners and understanding that everyone learns in different ways.
As part of our Respectful Relationships learning, we are exploring the idea that everyone learns in different ways and that understanding ourselves helps us learn better. Students are developing awareness of how they learn best and are beginning to recognise the strategies and environments that support their learning. This work builds wellbeing, confidence and connection, helping every child feel safe, valued and ready to learn as part of our classroom community.

It has been such a pleasure getting to know your children and watching them grow already. We are very proud of the way they have embraced learning and are excited for all that lies ahead this year 🌱💚
