Grade 6

This term was jam-packed with fun activities. We started with a splash at Haileybury for our swimming lessons. It was a great experience where we learned new skills, especially on the last day when we wore clothing while practising lifesaving skills. Next up was National Simultaneous Storytime. We enjoyed listening to Luna Roo through a live stream, which captures the spirit of rising to a challenge with heart and grit. More recently we enjoyed our last Oatlands Primary School Disco. Everyone loved dancing to Lush Life by Zara Larsson, the many Michael Jackson songs that played, and Gangnam Style. We finished off the term with our Athletics Carnival. Even though it was a cold day, we all kept warm by trying our best and having lots of fun.

We had an exciting term of learning in Maths as we explored our Percentages and Possibilities and Ready, Set, Measure units. During our measurement unit, we learned how to convert mass, length and capacity through a range of hands-on activities that helped us build our understanding. To celebrate the end of the unit, we took part in the Grade 6 Wacky Olympics, where we tackled a variety of challenges designed to get us thinking. Some of the activities included Kick the Shoe, Chuck the Chicken, the Leaky Cup Relay and Happy Hoppers. The Wacky Olympics was a fantastic way to apply our learning while celebrating everything we had achieved throughout the unit.

One of our main focuses in English this term was developing our note-taking skills and learning how they can help us become better readers, researchers, and writers. We followed a process that involved developing questions about a topic, reading through the entire text, highlighting important information, and then recording our notes in dot-point form. We were given a variety of texts to practise these skills and used strategies such as skimming and scanning to find specific information. In writing, we completed information reports on many different topics, including how AI works, what makes tornadoes and hurricanes dangerous, and the effects of the Black Death. As Term 2 started to wrap up, we used our note-taking skills to research and write a report on a topic of our choice.

During our integrated unit, Change, we explored the events that shaped early Australia and the reasons why people migrated here. We developed our understanding of significant events, including the First Fleet, the Gold Rush, Federation and early Australian policies. One interesting fact we discovered was that, following British settlement, Australia was divided into separate colonies. Henry Parkes and Edmund Barton played key roles in bringing these colonies together to form one nation. We finished the unit by writing biographies that explored their contributions and why they remain important figures in Australia's history.

While we are all looking forward to a rest over the holidays, we can’t wait for an action-packed Term 3.
