Writing

In Term 3, our writing program will center on mastering the Information Report. Throughout the term, students will explore the core purpose, structure, and language features of informative texts as they draft a complete report from scratch. Alongside drafting the report, students will build essential research and comprehension skills. They will practice effective note-taking, learn to distinguish between main topic sentences and supporting details, and use the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) framework to write concise summary sentences. This includes exploring different sentence types, converting statements to questions, combining sentences for better flow, and using expansion strategies such as the "because / but / so" framework and answering "who, when, and why" to create more sophisticated, detailed sentences.

In the second half of the term, the focus shifts from informative writing to mastering the Narrative Text, guiding students through the complete creative process of planning, drafting, editing, and publishing a story. Step-by-step, students will build a full narrative, starting with crafting a vivid character and setting introduction, followed by drafting dynamic action and problem paragraphs, and finishing with a satisfying resolution and conclusion. Throughout this process, students will sharpen their editing skills by learning how to revise unelaborated paragraphs to add depth and detail. Alongside this creative work, students will continuously reinforce their grammar and text comprehension.
