The first book we will be reading this term will be classic children's book, The Iron Man. Through this story of a colossal metal robot, a young boy named Hogarth, and a monstrous Space-Bat-Angel, students will build literal and inferred meanings. They will do this by connecting the characters' experiences to their own lives and discussing how the villagers and the Iron Man must ultimately work together to save the planet.

The next book we will be diving into is the story of Charlotte's Web. Through this heartwarming tale of Wilbur the pig, a young girl named Fern, and a wise spider named Charlotte, students will build literal and inferred meanings. We will connect the characters' experiences to our own lives as we explore powerful themes of friendship, loyalty, and the cycle of life, following Charlotte's clever plan to save Wilbur by weaving extraordinary words into her web.

Here is a breakdown of the key literacy skills we will be focusing on:

  • Decoding and Vocabulary: Using phonic, morphemic, and vocabulary knowledge to read multisyllabic words with complex letter patterns.

  • Grammar and Punctuation: Strengthening skills in subject–verb agreement, proper tenses, and the correct use of apostrophes.

  • Text Structures: Exploring how different print and digital texts across the curriculum use various structures for purpose and navigation.

  • Literary Devices and Media: Identifying literary devices like rhythm and onomatopoeia, and describing how images and sound extend the meaning of a story

Paired Fluency

We will continue participating in Paired Fluency this term. Reading is more than just getting the words right; it’s about flow and expression. In our Paired Fluency sessions, students will work together to practice reading aloud. This helps them find their "reading voice," improves their pacing, and builds the confidence to read more complex texts with ease.
