What's Happening In Grade 6?

As we head into our final term of the year, Grade 6 students are diving into a rich and exciting learning program across all key areas. Here's what they'll be exploring in English, Maths, and Inquiry.

English

Students will continue their work on Explanation texts during Term 4.  This will be followed by a focus on narrative writing.  Students will learn about the structure and purpose of narratives and will have opportunities to write their own narratives.  Students will use figurative language such as metaphors, similes, personification and onomatopoeia in their writing.

During Novel Studies, students will be reading ‘The Cay’ by Theodore Taylor which is set in Curacao during World War II. Students will explore and analyse the complex and changing characters and the themes of racism, friendship, survival and personal growth through life experiences in the novel.

Mathematics

The students will be continuing the Learning Assessment Framework (LAF) program that we commenced in Term 3 and then they will be learning how to solve long division problems with and without remainders. Students will categorise and display data in two-way tables and side-by-side column graphs and make interpretations of the data. They will also identify features of graphs used to manipulate and persuade an audience.  Students will explore the rules of BODMAS to solve number sentences.

Inquiry This term our Inquiry topic is Geography. Students will be locating and investigating continents including Europe, North America and South America and comparing these to Australia.  They will identify differences in the demographic, economic and cultural characteristics of these countries. Students will also explore how humans have impacted the environment and the concept of push and pull migration.

Homework

Homework will continue throughout Term 4. Homework consists of two activities from the Homework Matrix table as well as reading. Students are required to record what they have read in their Reading Diary and submit both of these every Friday.
