Y11 VCE VM Intergenerational Connections Program

At the end of Term 2, our Year 11 VCE Vocational Major students welcomed seven mentors from the Bayside City Council Community Intergenerational Connections Program, guiding them around the college and sharing their experiences. The feedback from the mentors has been overwhelmingly positive. They described the program as “wonderful,” “fun,” and “an excellent initiative,” enjoyed meeting our energetic and talented students, and valued the chance to connect with a generation they seldom have contact with — an experience they said has enriched their lives. Many expressed hope that the program continues in the future.

Student reflection

A few weeks ago, the Year 11 Vocational Major class had the opportunity to take part in a five-week program with members of the local elderly community. This experience was truly rewarding, as it showed that no matter the age difference, we can still connect and learn from each other. We were able to share how life is today while also learning about their past experiences and perspectives.

I really enjoyed my conversations with Rowan, who spoke in detail about his first job all the way to his last, and with Joy, who shared her own unique story. It was fascinating to compare their different lives and see how much has changed over time. My favourite moments were sharing laughs with Joy and hearing about her experiences. Overall, I loved being part of this program and believe everyone should have the chance to experience something like this.

We are proud to host this program and value the opportunity it provides for students and mentors to learn from one another.
