Dear Clayton North Primary School Community

Welcome to Autumn!

I am excited to announce the commencement of an extra Year 3/4 class as of next Tuesday. We have had to add this class due to significantly more enrolments than anticipated at the end of 2023. We acknowledge that this will create some disruption to our students and staff, but there are also benefits to be had; smaller classes, which equate to students receiving more one-to-one time with the classroom teachers.

We were successful in receiving the National Students Wellbeing Program grant this year, the outcome of which is the employment of a Student Wellbeing Officer to support wellbeing at Clayton North. Arne has been getting to know our students over the last few weeks. His role involves working with individual students as well as groups of students on issues as identified by staff.

International Women's Day

Today, 8th March is International Women’s Day. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a day to mark action for equality for women.

IWD originated from labour movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century. The earliest version was a "Women's Day" organized in New York City on February 28, 1909.

Today, International Women's Day is commemorated in a variety of ways worldwide; it is a public holiday in several countries and observed socially or locally in others. The United Nations observes the holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign, or theme in women's rights. In many countries, it is a celebration of womanhood and the difference women make in our lives.

I ask our community to reflect on the achievements of women in the world and also to think about the women in our own lives who do so much to support and inspire us - mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, friends, teachers, doctors ……the list goes on!

It is not a day to ‘put down’ men or boys. Many men and boys help support women to achieve great things in their lives and I’m sure they can think of the women in their lives and how they make a difference.

Historically, purple was a colour that denoted justice and dignity, and now it is used to represent women. Green is a symbol of hope. Today, purple is the colour of International Women's Day, and combined with green, represents the feminist movement.
