Mathematics
In Mathematics, Preps will be exploring numbers through hands on materials, also known as concrete materials. Students will be learning to work with numbers up to at least 20 and understand the value of the numbers. We will be exploring these numbers through counting forwards and backwards, estimate and count collections, sequence and comparing collections. Students will also practice writing numbers correctly.
Every learner will be provided with an individual Mathematics learning goal. Learner’s goals align with the whole school approach, utilising the SURF Proficiency Framework (Problem Solving, Understanding, Reasoning and Fluency) to build on their developing skills.
Through our morning greetings and daily timetable, students will be learning the days of the week and the months of the year.
What you can do at home:
- Talk to your child about the numbers they see around them (signs, clocks, phone numbers, calendars). This helps them read numbers and connect their purpose of learning at school to the real world.
- Practice counting forwards and backwards, to and from 0 to 20. This can be done by practice counting objects around the home or out and about. For example, “How many cups are there on the table?” and ‘How many are there if I have one less?’
- Discuss with your child the positions and directions of objects using language such as ‘between’, ‘near’, ‘next to’, ‘behind’, ‘in front of’, ‘forwards’, ‘towards’ and ‘backwards’.
