Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,

These past two weeks Grade 3 students have continued working on our Learning to Learn. We have started content in Reading, Writing, and Maths. It is amazing to see how well students have settled in to Grade 3.

Reading

In Reading, we have started our first Read2Learn unit of the year on the classic story, “The Wind in the Willows.” Students have started learning about stop & jots where we pause during the read aloud and take short notes to assist in answer the Big Question at the end of the lesson. So far, we have focused on the themes of Friendship/Loyalty, Responsibility, Irresponsibility, and Hospitality.

Writing

In writing, students have continued working through the writing process and working on their recount pieces about their holidays. Students have started publishing their pieces and have had a go at publishing on their iPads. We have started our Narrative unit where students will use the familiar Story Champs icons to help plan their writing pieces.

Maths

In maths, we have been working hard on our data unit. Students have experimented with gathering data in different ways. They have come up with so many interesting questions and have been able to organize their answers. They have had a go at taking their data and turning it into different types of graphs such as Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs. Some students even had a go at using an iPad to create a bar graph. Students have also learnt how to interpret data shown on a graph.

Vocab

In Vocab, we have been working on words from our Serial Text “The One and Only Ivan.” The words we have been learning the meaning of are Frantic, Domain, Gleam, Gaze, Patient, Murmur, Ponder, Timid, Fond, and Glimpse. You can have a discussion with your child at home about these words and what they mean.

Reminders

  • Please make sure your children bring their hats to school as they are required to wear them outside during Term 1 and 4.
  • Please make sure that students bring their iPads fully charged to school every day as we are incorporating this through all our learning.
  • Students are encouraged to be reading at home each night, they are aiming for 200 nights of reading. Don’t forget to log all reading in the reading journal.
  • Students are encouraged to bring along some cut-up fruit or vegetables in a small container, separate from a lunchbox that can be placed on top of your child’s desk.
