Grade 6 Community News

Well, it’s already the end of Week 4! It was so lovely to meet everyone at the Meet & Greet last night, it was a wonderful opportunity to get to know your child a little bit better.

Over the past 2 weeks, we have moved from our Learning 2 Learn units into our regular curriculum units.

In Reading, we began a Reading Reconsidered unit based around the book “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick. It is the story of an unlikely friendship between 2 very different boys beginning high school. We have discussed the style of storytelling that the author has chosen and how that affects our understanding.  We have also examined the different points of view, which characters can have in a story, about the same topic.

In Writing, we have been revising useful skills that improve our writing. This has varied from summarising small texts to using targeted speaking verbs. For example, the impact of using verbs such as “whispered, shouted, cried” instead of “said”. It’s a small detail, but it adds to the richness of our writing.

In Maths, we have begun our unit on Place Value. We have investigated Prime and Composite numbers, and how to use our knowledge of factors to determine which is which. Later, we examined the difference between square and triangular numbers. Below is an example of how the children should be setting out their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division working out.

Our Vocabulary words have been selected from our class text, “Freak the Mighty”. Please test your child on what they mean, and how they can use them in a sentence.
