Strength and Conditioning – Gym Report

The gym is off to a great start with bustling morning and afternoon sessions. Our athletes in grades 9-12 have shown noticeable progress since returning from the summer holiday.

Pictured are our ADP boys who have embraced the commencement of their program, creating sound standards from day one. We hope to carry these qualities throughout the entirety of the year to ensure success both on and off the pitch. Our primary focus is refining foundational skills and movement quality, establishing the groundwork for future adaptations as we approach the winter season. The ADP Touch Football Girls have exhibited impressive proficiency whilst showcasing a keen interest in improving lifting capacity and speed work. We have specifically targeted their acceleration and max velocity with a technique emphasis to develop autonomy.

As our rowers enter the competition phase, there has been a noticeable positive shift in the group’s focus on refining movement and increasing power for performance in the boat for their respective regattas.  Meanwhile, our swimmers have settled into their work as we transition into a strength and power phase, continuing to supplement their efforts in the pool as they approach their major swim meets.

Looking forward to continuing to work with all the athletes across the year!

NSW State Rowing Championships

The Kinross Wolaroi rowing squad made waves at the recent NSW State Rowing Championships in Penrith, showcasing outstanding talent and teamwork amidst tough competition. Our athletes performed spectacularly, and it was a reward for the hard work and effort put in through our nine-session weeks leading up to the second biggest event on the seasonal calendar. Some highlights were…

Record-Breaking Achievement: The schoolboy quad set a new national and course record with a time of 6:23.6, surpassing the previous record by three seconds, a historic feat in Australian rowing history. Congratulations to Angus Petersen, George Wakem, Harry Dymock, Oliver Smith and Oscar Cleary. It’s worth noting that this is the third time Adam Harrison has coached a crew to a national record in this event.

Juniors: Our junior squads excelled, with the junior girls' quad seizing gold, junior boys earning silver, and the U17 girls' eight claiming silver, showcasing our depth of talent. Rahni Jarrick rowed sensationally to claim a gold medal in the U16 single scull whilst Hamish Searle raced tenaciously in his single scull final claiming a well-deserved silver medal. This final was Hamish’s seventh race of the day, he was also our highest medal earner, taking home three silvers and a bronze over the weekend.

Seniors: The senior girls demonstrated skill and aggression in the face of adversity, securing gold, bronze, and silver medals, reaffirming their status as a force to be reckoned with leading into the Head of the River and Nationals. A shoutout to Tessa Wong, Ruby Leigo, Sienna Wilkin and Molly Mason for stepping up despite not feeling 100%.

With a total of 13 medals, we emerged as the best-performing school, ranking 7th overall on the medal tally, surpassing powerhouse clubs. The closest school to Kinross Wolaroi on the medal table was The King's School with a total of six medals. Thirty-five of our students out of 46 travelled back over the Blue Mountains with a medal around their necks.

Our success at the NSW State Rowing Championships reflects our commitment to teamwork. As we celebrate our successes at State, we remain focused on raising the bar and continuing our run of form leading into the National Championships and the Head of the River regattas.

Basketball

There are lots of moving parts to any co-curricular program. From the participants, to the coaches, facilities and resources and it all needs to come together for it to be effective. It’s the people behind the scenes that make things happen - from transport to fixtures it's all equally important.

I would like to use this opportunity to thank Jayden Zegzula for his help with the basketball season as he travels back to Newcastle for University. Over the last two years he has been excellent in building skills and developing basketballers at Kinross Wolaroi School.

Jayden made the following comments in an email that was sent out after his last training session:

“Each drill is an opportunity and a challenge, only one that you craft.  Not only to enhance your basketball skills but to hopefully sculpt a positive mindset beyond the game. Embrace the process, celebrate your progress and recognise the things that will get you there; wins and especially losses”

Its true to say that the process and the journey are just as, if not more important than the result, and thinking back on the my years of participating in team sport I definitely learnt more in the seasons where our losses out numbered our wins. Its important that we have a growth mindset, learn from the process and keep on showing up.

Over the next couple of weeks I challenge all players to work towards a goal and sense of achievement. This could be as simple as developing a skill that you were not comfortable with, it could be winning a game against strong opposition or something specific like improving on your layups. It is with this that personal and team growth will occur.

I would like to wish the Western Associated Schools basketball players who were selected the best of luck in the forthcoming tournament in Sydney. It was great to see around half the team that was selected come from Kinross Wolaroi School.

Kind regards,

Lee Taylor, MIC Basketball

Triathlon

Recently our triathlon squad competed in the Orange Interclub competition at Gosling Creek. Students braved some chilly water, wind on the bike and a hot run. There were impressive results, with Anna Childs finishing third in the women's Super Sprint distance and Sam Commins finishing first in the men's Super Sprint distance.

It was pleasing to note that several of our seniors stepped up to the Sprint Distance triathlon. This included a 540m swim / 23km ride (‘Airport loop’), 4.4km run. Those who completed this distance included Lucy Ashton, Jess Thompson, Isobella Montagliani, Tim Lowther, Zoe Wood, Will Ward and James Ashton.

Students are competing this week at the All Schools competition, held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. This is the culmination of their season and consists of both individual and team events, with several hundred other athletes.

Cricket Report

Week 4, Term 1

The cricket season is different to many other sports, as it offers players many opportunities to test themselves in fixtures each week – over fourteen rounds in the juniors and twenty rounds in the senior competition. As the regular season draws towards a close, our Kinross cricketers have been going from strength to strength. As you will see in our weekly results, many players’ individual performances are reflective of the time and effort that they have put into their training over the past 20 weeks. I commend our students on their dedication, hard work and enthusiasm for the game and encourage them to continue to put their best foot forward each week as we come to the ‘pointy end’ of the season.

This hard work is also reflected in our recent results within the Wiburd and Douglas Shield competitions. These knockout competitions are an U15, and Opens (respectively) competition, run for independent schools of NSW who are not competing in either the ISA or GPS competitions. Our Wiburd shield team recently progressed to the regional Semi-Finals with an 83-run victory over Hills Grammar Anglican School earlier in Term 1. Our Douglas Shield team will look to book their place in the Semi-Finals when they take on St. Lukes Grammar School, at Kinross, in Week 4. Good luck to both teams as they progress through their tournament.

Over the past weeks, Kinross Cricket has witnessed some outstanding individual performances on the field. I wish to congratulate the following players for reaching their personal milestones:

  • Declan Dixon: 5 for 15 vs Orange CYMS Gold
  • Hamish Leader: 52* vs Cavaliers CC
  • Billy Baldwinson: 5 for 2 (including a hat-trick) vs Cavaliers CC
  • Liam McKenzie: 5 for 10 vs Orange CYMS

Looking forward, it’s exciting to see a range of our teams in contention for finals cricket – yes, it’s that time of the season already! Moreover, seeing so many players enjoying their cricket - spending time with their friends in the sun of a Saturday morning - is the reminder to me why parents, coaches and our students give up their time to play this great game. Good luck to all in their upcoming fixtures this week.

I look forward to seeing you around the boundaries this weekend,

Will Waterson
