Standard 5: Equity and Diversity

Standard 5 of the Child Safe Standards focuses on equity and diversity, requiring organisations to uphold equity and respect diverse needs in policy and practice. This includes paying particular attention to the needs of children with disabilities, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children who are unable to live at home, and those questioning their sexuality or gender. It also emphasizes the importance of creating a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal children and young people.

At St Joseph’s, we actively support child safety and wellbeing through:

  • clear policies and behaviour frameworks that guide positive and respectful interactions
  • a shared Code of Conduct for staff, students, and families
  • participation in National Days of Action to promote awareness and community responsibility
  • regular Fortnightly BLITZ check-ins that strengthen student voice and wellbeing
  • implementation of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program
  • dedicated Wellbeing Week activities that nurture connection and care
  • ongoing staff training to ensure best practice and shared responsibility

Together, these practices strengthen our shared responsibility to ensure every child in our community is safe, valued, and supported.
