April is Autism Acceptance Month!
What is autism?
Autism is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others and experiences their environment. It is characterised by difficulties in social interaction, communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours, and sensory sensitivities. The word spectrum reflects the wide range of challenges that people on the spectrum experience and the extent to which they may be affected.
About 675,000 Australians are Autistic and each person has different strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations. It is four times more common in boys than in girls. The quality of life for many children and adults can be significantly improved by an early diagnosis and appropriate evidence-informed treatment. It is widely recognised, but understanding what this means in everyday life is not always straightforward. Many people are unsure what autism looks like beyond general descriptions, or how to respond when someone shares that they are Autistic.
The 2nd of April is World Autism Acceptance Day and April is World Autism Acceptance Month, which is a time to recognise Autistic people, celebrate their strengths and encourage understanding. The aim is to move beyond assumptions and support more informed, respectful interactions.
The 2026 theme, “If you learn I’m Autistic, I want you to… know, say, do”, responds directly to the gap between awareness and understanding. It reflects the uncertainty many people report about what to say or how to offer support and focuses on how understanding can guide more confident communication and everyday action at work, at school and in the community. It also encourages people to reflect on their own assumptions and consider the practical role they can play in creating more inclusive environments.

Take It Home Sessions
The Resilience Project has short "Take it Home" sessions for families to take part in together at home based on the sessions completed in class over the term.
With the school holidays starting now is a great time to set aside some time as a family to have fun, reconnect and explore the sessions.
