For many working parents, the school holidays can be a challenging time, especially when balancing work commitments with caring for younger children.Ā
1. Plan Ahead š School holidays can fill up quickly, so it helps to plan in advance. Consider organising playdates, babysitting arrangements, or community activities. Having something special to look forward to at the end of the holidays can also be motivating. Donāt forget to include some relaxed āstay-in-your-pyjamasā days and remember, not everything will go to plan, and thatās okay.
2. Share the Load š¤Lean on your support network, whether thatās family, friends, or neighbours. If possible, take turns caring for each otherās children or offer help in other ways, such as cooking a meal in return.
3. Get Involved in the Community š”There are often many local holiday activities available. Libraries, sports clinics, art workshops, and holiday programs can be great options many are free or low-cost. If your child feels unsure, attending with a friend can help build confidence.
4. Set Clear Expectations š¬Have conversations with your children about what the holidays will look like, especially if you are working. Setting clear expectations around routines, screen time, and activities can help everyone feel more settled.
5. Make Time for Yourself šāāļøLooking after your own wellbeing is important. Whether itās exercise, catching up with a friend, or simply taking some quiet time, small moments of self-care can make a big difference.
6. Be Flexible šItās okay to relax routines during the holidays. The house might be messier, and the snack requests may increase but thatās all part of the experience. A little flexibility can reduce stress for everyone.
7. Embrace Boredom šØItās not necessary to keep children constantly entertained. Some downtime can encourage creativity and imagination.
8. Create a Work Space šļøIf you are working from home, consider setting up a space for your children alongside you. Providing activities such as drawing, crafts, or simple tasks can help keep them engaged while you work.
And finally, a gentle reminder: Be kind to yourself, youāre doing the best you can. š
