Year 5
Wheelchair Basketball Incursion
On Monday 18th May, our Grade 5 students participated in a Wheelchair Basketball incursion facilitated by Basketball Victoria. This engaging experience provided students with the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of disability inclusion and the adjustments that may be required for participation in sporting activities.
The incursion encouraged awareness, empathy and teamwork, while also giving students a fun and memorable hands-on experience. Many students shared how much they enjoyed the session, with comments such as, “My legs felt like jelly afterwards!” and “My arms were so tired!” highlighting both the challenge and excitement of the activity.
A big thank you to Mrs Kelly for organising such an enjoyable event to help raise awareness and understanding of disability inclusion.
Year 6
Grade 6 Humanities – Eureka to Federation Incursion
During Term 2, students have been learning about the events of Federation and how Australia became a new country at the beginning of the 20th century. To support this unit of work, an incursion was organised, and the wonderful presenters from History Box Ballarat travelled all the way to Courtenay Gardens Primary School to deliver a fun and hands-on learning experience.
Students were taken back to the time of the gold rush in Victoria and explored the significant historical events that took place on the goldfields. They also learned about the idea of uniting the six Australian colonies in the late 1800s. The process was explained, including how the new Constitution was approved by Queen Victoria, leading to Federation and the birth of a new nation. Some lucky students were selected as volunteers to take part in the presentation, dressing up in clothing worn during the gold rush and Federation period in Australia.
Students participated in a range of hands-on activities, including writing with inkwells and calligraphy pens, which proved to be a challenge for many. They also experienced an Indigenous Australian game, like tic-tac-toe but using only three stones, which required strong strategic thinking. A variety of artefacts from the time were on display, and students were encouraged to work out what each item was and how it was used. The favourite activity of the morning was using clay to create a small face, like the gargoyles found on some buildings in Melbourne.
Overall, the students had a fun and engaging morning, thanks to our presenters, Cyn and Barry from History Box Ballarat.
