Welcome Back to Term 2

Welcome back to the start of Term 2. It has been pleasing to witness the positive return of our students, who have each displayed a settled tone for the term ahead. I would particularly like to commend the high standard of uniform worn by our students, and I thank you for supporting your sons in reflecting their pride in themselves and in our College.

As we commence this term, we are strongly focused on deepening individual learning, building on the skills developed in Term 1, and challenging every student to achieve their personal best.

We welcome all new students and families to the St Pius X Community including the following new staff members to our community: Mrs Natalie Taetossian and Mrs Wendy Taylor in the Junior School. Dr Joanna Molloy also joins the Junior School SEED team for the term, replacing Mrs Jenny Williams.

We welcome back Mr Justin Varjavandi who joins the Senior School for the term, replacing Mr Paul de Silva who is on long service leave.

I take the opportunity to thank all the staff who led tours, both domestically and internationally: Mr Dominic McGeekie, Mr Justin Gates, Mr Jack Kovacic, Mr Richard Lacey, Mr Simon Yue, Ms Leisa Proc, Mr Matt Buda, Mr James Bourke, Mr Callum Montgomerie and Mrs Jill Greenwood.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day, our College was honoured to receive the Australian Flag, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag, presented by our local Member of Parliament, Ms Nicolette Boele. Together, these three flags stand as powerful symbols of our nation’s identity, shared history and commitment to unity and respect.

In the context of ANZAC Day, the Australian Flag represents the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served our country in times of war and peace. The Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag acknowledge the First Nations peoples of this land and recognise the service and sacrifice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have served Australia.

As we prepare to commemorate ANZAC Day, the presence of these flags invites our community to reflect on courage, service and remembrance, and to honour all who have contributed to the defence of our nation. Together, they remind us that remembrance brings us together in gratitude, respect and hope for the future.

Loving God of compassion and peace,

As we approach ANZAC Day,

we take time to prepare our hearts to remember.

We hold in prayer all who have served our nation,

especially those who offered their lives

in the hope of protecting others

and working towards a more just world.

Mindful of the spirit of ANZAC,

we reflect on courage shaped by service,

strength guided by care for others,

and sacrifice grounded in love rather than hatred.

As a community shaped by the Edmund Rice tradition,

may this time of remembrance deepen our commitment

to human dignity, to standing alongside those who suffer,

and to living as people who seek peace and justice.

As we look ahead to ANZAC Day,

guide us to remember well, to honour sincerely,

and to carry forward a hope-filled responsibility

for the world entrusted to us.

We make this prayer through Christ,

who calls us to be peacemakers.

Lest we forget.

Amen.
