Foundation
It has been an exciting start to term two in Foundation - we are now bringing home our own decodable readers to read with an adult. Students have gained confidence segmenting the sounds and blending them back together to read words. We have focused on seven letters and their sounds - s, m, a, t, p, i and f so our readers are based on these letters and their sounds.
Student have also begun paired fluency reads in the morning - where they practice sounds and words to a partner. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and excitement as we develop our reading skills.
During writing we have enjoyed looking at letters, words and sentences. We can use a full sentence when sharing with our partner about the actions or the 'who' in a sentence.
In mathematics students are starting with a whole, then partitioning into two parts. For example the whole is 8 - it can be partitioned into 4 and 4. We have been working hard to write our numerals correctly and have enjoyed using manipulatives to help us create solutions.
Our new RE topic for this term is 'Our Catholic Church'. We are learning about belonging, family, the community and how we celebrate together.
In Science last week we enjoyed learning about our five senses through smelling and tasting games. We are looking forward to exploring the features of different plants and animals in the coming weeks.
We always look forward to catching up with our Year 6 and Year 12 buddies - we were lucky enough to have a session with both of our buddies this week!
Next week we have our Mothers Day Breakfast and Liturgy on Thursday morning. We look forward to seeing our Mums, Nans, Grandmas or special people joining us for breakfast and Liturgy and to pop into our classrooms after the Liturgy.
Year 1
The Year 1 Stayback was a fun and memorable event that gave students the chance to socialise and enjoy activities outside of normal class time. The stayback included enjoyable experiences such as playing on the playground, participating in team games, and sharing afternoon snacks, with treats like icy poles being a highlight. The event provided a fun and engaging environment where students could build friendships, develop social skills, and feel more connected to their school community, making it a successful and enjoyable part of the Year 1 experience.
Year 2
In Comprehension, students have been exploring fascinating facts about paper. They began by sharing their prior knowledge and engaging in a range of learning tasks to deepen their understanding. To bring their learning to life, students were thrilled to design and create their own paper aeroplanes, which they then tested outside—combining creativity and plenty of fun!
We are looking forward to exploring more fun topics!
Years 3 and 4
Year 3
Year 3 has had an excellent start to Term 2, jumping straight into new learning and exciting experiences.
In our first week, we participated in our very first Cross Country event. Our teachers were incredibly proud of the determination shown by all students, but most of all, the way everyone supported and encouraged one another. The cheering from the sidelines was just as impressive as the running itself!
In Maths, we have been exploring fractions and applying our understanding through a variety of hands-on activities and games. From halves to quarters, we are becoming more confident in breaking things into equal parts (especially when food is involved — very important maths!).
In Literature, we have begun our class novel, Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon by Anita Heiss. This engaging story follows Yirra, a young girl navigating life, friendships and challenges, alongside her mischievous (and very memorable) dog, Demon. We have been thoroughly enjoying the story so far, especially the chaos and mischief that Demon manages to create!
It has been a wonderful start to the term, and we are looking forward to all the learning still to come.
Year 4
The Year 4s have launched into Term 2 with energy and enthusiasm!
As part of our Respectful Relationships learning, we tackled the challenge of “Thread the Needle.” At first, there were a few tangled strategies, but after discussing the importance of clear instructions, careful listening and watching one another, things quickly improved. Before long, we were working together like a well-oiled machine... teamwork truly makes the dream work!
We also explored the beautiful story book The Invisible String by Patrice Karst. This touching story helped us understand that we are always connected to the people we love, no matter how far away they may be, through an 'invisible string'. Inspired by this idea, students created heartfelt craft pieces to represent their own special connections.
In Science, we’ve been getting hands-on while investigating forces. Students explored push, pull and twist forces by comparing how much effort it takes to move different objects, including a basketball, soccer ball, medicine ball and even plasticine.
It has been a fantastic start to the term, filled with collaboration, curiosity and plenty of fun along the way.
