News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

In Cooking this week Grade 4 and 5 cooked Zucchini and Vegetable Gyoza and  Zucchini Okonomyaki.

From the garden we used zucchini, silverbeet, walking onions, celery, perpetual spinach, garlic chives and chives.

Lea’s group, chopped the zucchini, onion and greens for the Zucchini and Vegetable Gyoza. Clem, Frankie B and Lexi did a great job of cutting the greens very finely to add to the mixture.  Heidi, Ivy and Lily enjoyed cutting the zucchini into small pieces and whizzing them in the food processor.

Romy, Harper, Ulla, Alfie, Perla and Henry grated the zucchini and onions for the Okonomyaki and had fun working together to squeeze out the liquid from the zucchinis and onions.

After recess we all worked together to make Gyoza.  We learnt how to fold and pleat the Gyoza by hand. We made 43 Gyoza and Alfie used his maths skills to work out how many we could have each.

Harper and Perla worked well together to cook the Okonomyaki.  Clem and Frankie B said they enjoyed cooking the Gyoza.

We didn’t need to make any sauces,  as we used the left-over Gyoza Dipping sauce and the Okonomyaki sauce, Grade 5 and 6 made last week.

While the Gyoza and Okonomyaki were being cooked, everyone else cleaned up and set the tables. Merry and Harper went out into the garden and collected some beautiful flowers and decorated the table with them.

Ivy had 4 Gyoza and liked the crunchy fried bottom.  Merry said she doesn’t like zucchini because of the texture but in the Okonomiyaki she enjoyed it and liked the texture better. Lexi liked cooking the Gyoza and plating up.

Well done Grade 4 and 5 and Lea, it was a great cooking session!
