STAGE 1 News

Welcome to Week 5, Term One!

It’s been a busy start to the year, and we absolutely love seeing all the happy and excited faces each morning. The enthusiasm and energy from our students in K/1 Magpies and Year 2 Possums have made the beginning of the term so special!

K/1 MAGPIES

In the K/1 Magpies, students have been working incredibly hard during our writing lessons. We’ve been exploring the books Our Island by Alison Lester and Under the Southern Cross by Frané Lessa, learning how to compare the places in the stories to places we’ve visited. The students’ writing and drawings have been outstanding! Here are some wonderful examples of their work.

In Maths, the Magpies have been working hard to master number combinations and deepen their understanding of polygons. They’ve been practicing addition and subtraction in different ways and learning to identify and describe the properties of various shapes. We have also learnt that dice patterns help us to see smaller numbers inside bigger numbers. The students are really enjoying hands-on activities and games. Here are some photos showcasing their learning in action!

In Science, the Magpies have been learning all about Living Things and how they change over time. They’ve been describing the different body parts and features of animals, categorising them by their body coverings like fur, feathers, scales, shells, and skin. The students have also been explaining how different animals move using their unique body parts.  It’s been an exciting exploration of the natural world!

In Geography, the Magpies have been learning about natural and built features in our environment. We explored our school grounds and created two drawings showcasing these features. Here are some examples of the beautiful work the students have done!

In Week 3 Magpies also had the opportunity to visit the Life Education Van and meet Healthy Harold! We had a great time!

We’re excited for the amazing term ahead!

2 Possums

In the Possums we have had a wonderful start to 2025 with many collaborative learning opportunities in addition to students individual progress.  Our English has included a focus on the text ‘Under The Southern Cross’ by Frané Lessac.  Students have learned about many places around our country and also created their own class book of Martin’s Gully with a focus on adjectives and prepositions.

In Mathematics we have been working on repeating patterns of two or three objects and continuing these. We have also begun our Number and Place Value focus groups which run on Wednesday’s with all our Stage 1 teachers plus Mrs Polson and Mr Murdock.

In case you missed it the Possums have had their foyer display in the Office for the past fortnight for our community to share.  Fear not if you have as we are now able to display these in our classroom where you can see them during our 3-way interviews next week.

In P.E the Possums have been working on throwing and catching as well as teamwork. In Friday sport we have been working alongside the Magpies for shared games including having to utilise our throw to score a point through another students’ legs as the goal.

Also, just a quick reminder that if you have not yet booked your spot for 3-way interviews you can pop onto Compass to do this.
