Grade 3-6 Classroom: Mathematics

Students have been very (unusually!) eager for maths lessons over the past few weeks as we've been exploring our Data Investigation unit through the Ochre program. They've been working on developing investigation questions, collecting categorical and numerical data, creating data tables and using digital technologies through the Excel program to display their data in column and line graphs. It's been great to see the students so engaged (so engaged they wouldn't look up for a photo!) in using technology as a tool for demonstrating their learning in maths lessons and the enthusiasm they've had for learning about each of the different types of graphs, how we interpret them and what they're best suited for. Who ever would've thought data and statistics could spark so much interest?!

Foundation - Grade 2 Maths

We are having so much fun in the junior room with our maths program! The foundation students are learning about ordinal positions and by doing this, we ran a race outside and worked out the ordinal positions we came. We have also been using our number tracks to support our understanding of where numbers are, if they are in between.

The Grade 1/2 students have begun their unit on Data, where we are understanding what responses are relevant to the questions that we are trying to answer. Students have been going around the school to ask their questions and list their responses to see if they are appropriate or not.

Energy Breakthrough (EBT)

Over the past few weeks, Grade 3-6 students have been working hard on their preparations for the upcoming Energy Breakthrough (EBT) event. Monday after-school training has been well-attended and students are dedicated to applying their learning around exercise, healthy eating, sleep and mental health in preparation for the event. They're finalising rehearsals for the presentation, creating posters and refining their learning around the operations of the vehicle, energy transfer and carbon emissions. We are all very eager for the EBT event next week and know that our students will make us so proud as they represent St Mary's in the Human Powered Vehicle event. We would love to have as many supporters attend in Maryborough on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st November to cheer our Sminglewood team on.
