Foundation/Grade 1

Maths

The Grade 1 students finished off their unit of time by creating clocks that they were able to manipulate the hands to make o’clock times. Grade 1 students have moved onto the unit about shapes, beginning with 2D shapes where they explored the features of different shapes including the name of the shape, how many sides and vertices (corners) the shape has and where the shape can be located in real life examples. The Grade 1 students created a picture using 2D shapes.

The Foundation students learnt how to represent 2-digit numbers using bundling sticks. Students have been given a 2-digit number that they had to make in the most effective way using bundling sticks, using bundles of ten rather than just individual sticks (ones). They worked in partners to give a 2-digit number and then make it using the bundling sticks.

Inquiry

This term our inquiry unit focuses on animals including their features and habitats. The students have selected an animal that they will focus on this term for their project. There are multiple elements to their projects including a poster, a clay model of the animal and a diorama of their habitat. We have begun with the posters that has an image of their selected animal, their habitat and the features of the animal labelled.

Religion:

Reconciliation preparation

This week we are in the final stages of preparing for the following student’s Reconciliation. Reconciliation is The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the next step in your child’s faith journey. It is an important sacrament as they will learn more about God’s love for them and how they can start to be more aware of the choices they make in their everyday lives. The gift of forgiveness can help us grow closer to God.

This week we will keep the following students in our prayers, as together, we prepare for the Sarcament of Reconciliation on Friday at 9:30am in the Church.  You are invited to join us to recognise this important milestone in the students' lives.

We share some items that were special to us during our choices lesson.

English

Partner Reading is a valuable opportunity for students to practise and enjoy texts they have read or listened to, with the goal of improving comprehension and developing fluency skills. The Year 2 SK students have been working hard on giving constructive peer feedback using guiding sentence starters such as:

  • “I heard great expression when you read the part in the text with…”
  • “I like how you read at a smooth pace that sounded natural, like talking.”
  • “I noticed you read accurately because you went back and reread a word to make sure it made sense.”

This process helps students become more aware of what good reading sounds like and encourages them to support each other’s progress.

Dear Families,

Year 3 & 4 Summer Sports

What an amazing day our Year 3/4 students had at Summer Sports Day at Tongala Primary School. From Hunter to Hoop Showdown, they gave it their all and represented our school with pride, teamwork, and loads of energy! Big thanks to Makayla from Kyabram P-12 College for organising such a great day and Tongala PS for allowing us to use the school.

Activities included:

Hunter🏃‍♂️, Number Hockey🏑, Target Games🎯, Boot Ball, Rapid Fire💥, T-ball & Hula hoop Showdown. It was fantastic to see so many schools come together, and our students showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout. Well done to everyone who took part, you made us proud!

Year 4 Fire Carrier session with Tankia

On Tuesday 21st October, Year 4 students took part in a special Fire Carrier session with Tanika from Catholic Education Sandhurst. This was a very important time where we learned more about Aboriginal culture, the meaning of being a Fire Carrier, and how we can show respect and care for others and the land. Before 2026, students have the unique chance to become Fire Carriers — leaders in our school who help share and support Aboriginal perspectives. This is a great opportunity for our Year 4s to step up and be role models as they move into Year 5 next year. All students showed wonderful respect and focus during the session. It was clear they are excited about the chance to lead and make a positive difference in our school community. A big thank you to Tanika for sharing her knowledge, stories, and guidance with us. We are grateful for her time and wisdom 😊

  Maths in our classrooms

📏 Mass and Capacity Fun! ⚖️💧 Students were busy exploring Mass and Capacity in class the past few weeks. Students have had a great time weighing different classroom items, recording their weights, and comparing them to put them in order from lightest to heaviest. We’ve also been learning about millilitres and litres by measuring the capacity of various containers. The best part... We made predictions first, then checked to see if we were right! Lots of hands-on learning and great thinking happening😊👏

5/6

Over the last couple of weeks in Literacy, the Year 5/6 students have been working with the novel The Last Bear, using it as inspiration to create persuasive texts about the impact of climate change and pollution on polar bears in the Arctic regions. Their focus has been on developing strong persuasive language and using evidence to support their arguments. Students have written engaging introductions and are now working on their first and second paragraphs. It has been wonderful to see their growing understanding of the importance of researching information before writing.

In Maths, students have recently completed their unit on data representation. They thoroughly enjoyed gathering real-life data on car colours, types, and models at the Campaspe Street roundabout, and then graphing their findings to show trends and comparisons. This hands-on experience helped them apply their data collection and graphing skills in a fun and meaningful way.

The students also had a fabulous time at the Summer Sports Day in Kyabram, participating in activities such as lawn bowls and croquet. Many of these sports were new to them, and it was great to see everyone getting involved and enjoying the experience.

In Religion, the Year 5 and Year 6 students have been exploring separate topics. The Year 5s have been focusing on the Beatitudes and what they mean in our lives today, while the Year 6s have been learning about Life Relationships. Their lessons have explored family dynamics, emotions, and the complexities of growing into young adults.

Additionally, the students took part in the Inform and Empower session on Critical Thinking, where they explored how to evaluate online information and think more deeply about what they read and see. This session encouraged them to question sources, identify bias, and make informed decisions — valuable skills for lifelong learning.

It has been a busy few weeks of learning, filled with hard work, thoughtful reflection, and plenty of enjoyable experiences.
