Our Outdoor Education camp was such an amazing experience that challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. One of the biggest highlights was our big hike to the amphitheatre lookout. It was hot, steep, and tiring, and we were carrying all our gear on our backs but when we finally reached the top and looked out over the hills together, it was such a proud and unforgettable moment. I also felt a sense of achievement in the smaller things, like setting up my tent, waterproofing my bag, and figuring out the best way to pack my backpack each day. Rafting was my favourite as getting the opportunity to swim and have fun on the rafts was definitely a highlight.
There were plenty of challenges too. Cooking didn’t always go to plan, packing and unpacking each morning was tricky, and putting on a cold wetsuit was hard. But what made the hard parts easier was my group. We supported each other, stayed positive, and found ways to laugh even when we were tired. I learned that I’m capable of pushing through when things get tough, and that teamwork really does make everything better. By the end of camp, I had made stronger friendships and felt proud of how far we had all come together.
Camp was such an amazing experience, and I am so happy I decided to choose the Outdoor Ed elective. Being with friends doing things we wouldn’t usually do like sleeping under a tarp, rafting through rapids and using trangias to cook our meals, all made the experience unforgettable and brought my friends and I closer together with each other as well as other people and teachers in our group.
