As we approach the Semester 2 examinations for Year 7 and Year 8 (November 24 to 25), we are helping students develop effective study routines and confidence when completing formal assessments. Over the coming weeks, students will be guided through revision strategies in class, including the use of flash cards, mind mapping, practice questions and analysing exemplar responses.
We encourage families to support students to plan ahead and create simple study timetables so that revision is completed gradually rather than left to the final days before exams. Research into the forgetting curve reminds us that regular review is key to retaining new knowledge.
Alongside academic preparation, it is equally important that students feel calm, rested and empowered. Everyone feels some stress during tests, even those who appear relaxed. Stress prepares the brain to take on challenges. The goal is to manage anxious thoughts so they do not become overwhelming. Strategies such as slow breathing, focusing on the task at hand and writing out worries ahead of time can help students feel more in control.
Healthy routines will also make a big difference:
Ensure students eat a balanced breakfast on exam days. Include protein to sustain concentration.
Encourage good sleep throughout the week.
Remind students to keep hydrated, water helps the brain stay alert.
Avoid buying energy drinks which can increase anxiety and reduce focus.
Finally, we remind students that while exams are an important learning experience, they will never capture all of their unique strengths, talents and creativity. We simply want each young person to feel proud of their effort and see growth in their learning.
Please reach out to Home Group teachers if you feel your child needs additional support with organisation, wellbeing or study habits during this time.
Together, we can help our students approach exams with confidence.
