Encouraging Children to Read

Whilst the end of the year is fast approaching and we may all be feeling a little fatigued and ready for the extended break, now is the time to double down on our reading, setting ourselves up for a great summer of books!

Here’s a fun way to engage your children in book discussions; together as a family, can you work out the book title from the emoji? Once you’ve worked them out, share a discussion about whether you have read this book, or remember it from your childhood, and have a quick, engaging book chat. This is an easy way to promote a lifelong love of reading for fun and enjoyment. Recently, our Middle School Library lessons have been focusing on “what type of reader are you”? And the underlying message is that there are many, many ways to enjoy books and there is no “correct” way. Encourage your children to listen to books (yes, this is real reading!), read together, quit a book if it no longer serves a purpose and know that there is a book for everyone!
