It has been another exciting and productive week in Prep, filled with hands-on learning, creativity and lots of curiosity!
In Maths, we have been exploring skip counting, time, and worded problems. Skip counting has helped students recognise number patterns. We have been practising counting by 2s using songs, games and number mazes, which made learning both active and fun! We also revisited Time, focusing on reading o’clock analogue clocks. Students have enjoyed matching times to daily routines and sharing what they do at different times of the day. Lastly, we introduced worded problems or number stories as our Preps call them, a brand-new challenge for our Preps! Students have been learning how to read the problem carefully, identify the important information, and choose the right strategy to solve it. It’s been wonderful to see how proud they feel when they find the solution. Challenging but fun!

Our Reading program has now been divided into two parts to support different aspects of literacy growth. One part focuses on phonics, where students use their knowledge of sounds and letters to decode and find words in books. They are becoming more confident readers each week as they blend and segment sounds to make meaning. The second part focuses on comprehension strategies. We’ve been practising how to think about what we read, making predictions, retelling stories in our own words, and talking about how characters might be feeling. Students are learning that reading isn’t just about saying the words but understanding and connecting with the story too.

In Writing, we have been continuing to practise our handwriting and have also started planning our very first narratives! Students began by brainstorming characters, settings, and story ideas. We’ve focused on creating interesting beginnings that introduce who the story is about and where it takes place. The students are excited to continue their writing journeys and can’t wait to finish their stories. It’s been lovely to see so much imagination and enthusiasm during writing time!

In Inquiry, we have been exploring the three main habitats: land, water, and sky and learning about the animals that live in each one. Students have sorted pictures, discussed animal features, and shared what they know about where certain animals live and why. These conversations have helped us think about how animals adapt to survive in their environments. This week, we also created red poppies to commemorate Remembrance Day. We talked about the meaning behind this day and why it is important to remember those who served.
We’re so proud of how much the students have grown in their confidence and enthusiasm for learning!
