AI in Victorian Schools: A Forward-Looking and Insightful Forum presented by VASSP

Senior Department of Education leaders, selected VASSP members and representatives from key peak bodies (including the APF) came together for an invitation-only forum exploring one of the most significant shifts shaping the future of education, Artificial Intelligence and its implications for Victorian schools.
Transforming Workload and Learning: AI in Victorian Schools was held on Tuesday, 18 November 2025 at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership in East Melbourne. The session proved to be an engaging, informative, and highly energising discussion about what AI means for schools today and in the years ahead.
Led by AI and systems implementation expert Sami Mäkeläinen, the session provided a clear overview of the rapidly evolving AI landscape and its role as a strategic enabler in schools. Participants explored how AI can reduce workload, strengthen data-informed decision-making, enhance teaching and learning, and support schools in addressing broader system priorities such as ethics, equity, and responsible implementation at scale.
The Academy also delivered a focused micro-session showcasing practical examples of AI in classroom practice, highlighting how teachers can safely and effectively leverage AI to enhance learning without increasing complexity.
A key takeaway from the forum was the reassurance that schools are not expected to navigate the AI landscape alone. The Academy has a growing suite of resources, professional learning and implementation supports designed specifically to assist school leaders and teachers in approaching AI with confidence, responsibility, and a focus on student outcomes.
The APF encourages members to engage with The Academy’s offerings as this rapidly developing area continues to reshape our profession. The forum highlighted the importance of staying informed, collaborating across the system, and ensuring that AI adoption is purposeful, ethical, and aligned with our core purpose improving learning and wellbeing for every student.
A sincere thank you to our colleagues at VASSP and The Academy for their initiative in bringing key education personnel together, as we collectively navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI.
